Businesses urged to support Western Rail Link to Heathrow
Firms of all kinds are being asked to show support for a direct rail service to Heathrow T5 via Slough through a new tunnel off the Great Western main line.
Network Rail has launched a six-week consultation process on its preferred route for the Western Rail Link to Heathrow (WRLtH), (networkrail.co.uk/westernraillinktoheathrow) and now Thames Valley Berkshire LEP is asking business to get behind the proposals.
Network Rail says the benefits of the scheme, first evaluated in 2009, show it will generate:
• £800 million of additional economic activity
• £1.5 billion of business efficiency savings
• 42,000 new jobs
• A shift in travel habits, with 10-20 per cent of travellers switching from road to rail, meaning one million fewer road journeys
• 5,200 fewer tonnes of CO2
Responses can be made via an online form here.
Ruth Bagley, who is project lead for WRLtH, said: “We urge businesses of all sectors, sizes and location to contribute to Network Rail’s consultation for a new Western Rail Link to Heathrow. This is your chance to show your support and have your say in an investment that the LEP and various other bodies have been pressing for, for too many years now."
